AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE– In a move designed to elevate the global standing of Anambra’s premier state institution, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah, as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).

The statement, made on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, through the Guv’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, signals a strategic shift towards ethical leadership and cross-continental scholastic partnership for the university.

Bridging Scholarship and Social Justice

Bishop Kukah, commonly considered among Nigeria’s many formidable public intellectuals, gives COOU a pedigree that covers some of the world’s most distinguished castles of knowing.

The state federal government stressed that his function would go beyond ritualistic duties, focusing rather on “strengthening global connections” and promoting a culture of research-driven advocacy.

“Kukah is an eminent Nigerian intellectual and cleric whose contributions incorporate academic scholarship with the pursuit of social justice,” Aburime specified.

The consultation is seen as a key element of the Soludo administration’s “Option Program” for the education sector.

An Academic Titan

The new Chancellor’s academic trajectory is a testament to lifelong learning. After his early studies at St. Augustine Major Academy and the University of Ibadan, Kukah made his PhD from SOAS University of London in 1990.

His intellectual footprint also includes sophisticated research studies at the University of Oxford and Harvard University.

Beyond the Class: The Kukah Tradition

The state federal government highlighted Kukah’s work as the creator of The Kukah Centre, an organization that has become a national referral point for interfaith harmony and policy reform.

His consultation is expected to supply COOU trainees and professors with a special bridge between theoretical academia and practical nationwide advancement.

A Dedication to Excellence

The appointment has been met early honor from scholastic circles in Anambra State, with many viewing it as a significant “catch” for the state-owned organization.

By placing a figure of Kukah’s global stature at the head of the university, the Anambra State Government intends to reposition COOU as a competitive option to federal and personal universities.

As the university neighborhood prepares for a formal investiture, the focus remains on how this collaboration in between a reformist Governor and a visionary cleric will redefine the developmental trajectory of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in the years to come.
