AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE– In a move designed to elevate the global standing of Anambra’s premier state institution, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah, as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).
The statement, made on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, through the Guv’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, signals a strategic shift towards ethical leadership and cross-continental scholastic partnership for the university.

Bishop Kukah, commonly considered among Nigeria’s many formidable public intellectuals, gives COOU a pedigree that covers some of the world’s most distinguished castles of knowing.

“Kukah is an eminent Nigerian intellectual and cleric whose contributions incorporate academic scholarship with the pursuit of social justice,” Aburime specified.

The new Chancellor’s academic trajectory is a testament to lifelong learning. After his early studies at St. Augustine Major Academy and the University of Ibadan, Kukah made his PhD from SOAS University of London in 1990.
