
For many Nigerian families, education is still closely tied to certificates. A university degree is seen as proof of success, while professional qualifications are often viewed as the safest route to employment and social mobility. As a result, young people are frequently encouraged to collect degrees and certificates, sometimes without equal attention to what they can actually do with the knowledge they have acquired.
Certificates remain important. They can demonstrate that someone has completed a course of study and acquired a particular level of education. However, Nigeria’s growing economic and social challenges require more than qualifications on paper. The country needs people who can identify problems, develop practical solutions, create businesses, improve systems and turn knowledge into useful results.
This does not mean Nigeria needs fewer educated people. Rather, it needs an education system that produces educated problem solvers. Recent World Bank evidence shows that education alone does not guarantee a good job in Nigeria, with many workers holding secondary or post-secondary qualifications still unable to access occupations that make full use of their skills.
The distinction is important. A certificate tells part of a person’s educational story, but problem-solving ability shows what that person can contribute. For a country dealing with challenges ranging from unemployment and unreliable infrastructure to poor public services, insecurity, low productivity and digital transformation, the ability to turn knowledge into solutions is increasingly valuable.
The strong emphasis on certificates did not emerge without reason. For decades, formal education has been one of the clearest pathways to professional employment in Nigeria. Parents who encouraged their children to attend university often did so because they believed a degree would provide greater opportunities than they had themselves.
That aspiration remains understandable. Education can improve a person’s opportunities, expose them to new knowledge and provide access to professional careers. The problem begins when the certificate becomes the destination rather than evidence of what a person has learnt and can contribute.
A student can graduate with an impressive qualification but struggle to write a professional proposal, analyse a business problem, use relevant digital tools, communicate effectively or develop a practical solution to an everyday challenge. Another graduate may have a less prestigious qualification but possess strong technical skills, creativity, communication ability and the confidence to solve problems independently.
The difference becomes increasingly visible when graduates enter the labour market.
The World Bank has reported that only about one in ten employed Nigerians work in occupations such as management, professional, technical and clerical roles that make substantial use of advanced skills. It also found that even among people with post-secondary education, more than half do not obtain such jobs. The organisation points to a combination of skills mismatch and the shortage of suitable high-quality jobs.
This means that simply increasing the number of people with certificates cannot solve Nigeria’s employment challenges.
There is also a deeper issue with an education culture that rewards memorisation more than application. Students can become highly focused on predicting examination questions, memorising lecture notes and reproducing expected answers. These approaches may help them pass examinations, but they do not necessarily prepare them to deal with unfamiliar problems.
Real life rarely provides questions in the exact format students have practised.
A graduate working in a company may discover that sales have suddenly fallen. A nurse may encounter a situation requiring quick judgement. An engineer may have to find a solution when equipment fails. A teacher may have to adapt a lesson for students who are struggling. An entrepreneur may need to survive when customers stop buying.
None of these situations comes with a model answer at the back of a textbook. This is why problem-solving must become a central part of education.
The International Labour Organisation defines skills mismatch as a situation in which the skills employers seek do not correspond with the skills individuals possess. It notes that people can even be simultaneously overqualified and underskilled, particularly when their education does not align with their occupation.
For Nigeria, this is a warning against measuring educational success only by the number of graduates produced.
The country needs graduates who can take what they have learnt and use it in situations that do not look exactly like the examples in their textbooks.
Nigeria’s challenges are too complex to be solved by certificates alone. The country needs people who can look at an existing problem and ask a more useful question: What can be done about it?
Consider unemployment. A certificate holder may spend years searching for an existing vacancy because employment has traditionally been associated with being hired by an organisation. A problem solver may also look for employment, but may think differently about the situation. They may identify an unmet need, develop a service around it, learn the skills required and create an income opportunity.
This does not mean every graduate must become an entrepreneur. Nigeria still needs doctors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, accountants, researchers, administrators and other professionals working within established institutions. The important issue is that these professionals should be capable of solving problems within their fields rather than simply occupying positions.
An engineer who can identify why a machine repeatedly breaks down is more valuable than one who only knows the theory behind the machine. A teacher who can recognise why students are struggling and adjust the teaching approach brings more value than one who simply completes the syllabus. A lawyer who can understand a client’s problem and develop a practical legal strategy demonstrates more than knowledge of legal principles. The same applies to virtually every profession.
Problem-solving also has a direct relationship with productivity. When workers can identify inefficiencies and suggest better ways of doing things, organisations can save time, reduce costs and improve their services.
This matters greatly in Nigeria, where many businesses operate under difficult conditions. Companies deal with infrastructure challenges, changing consumer behaviour, limited access to finance, technology adoption and competition. Workers who can think creatively and adapt to changing circumstances can become important assets.
The World Bank identifies problem-solving alongside literacy, numeracy, socio-emotional skills, technical abilities and digital skills as part of the broader skills needed to participate effectively in the modern labour market.
In addition, problem-solving can help Nigeria become less dependent on imported solutions.
A country that produces graduates who can investigate local challenges and develop appropriate responses is better positioned to innovate. Instead of always waiting for solutions to arrive from elsewhere, local professionals can design technologies, services and processes that reflect the realities of Nigerian communities.
This is particularly relevant in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, education, transportation, energy and technology.
Nigeria has millions of young people with ideas, but ideas alone are not enough. The ability to identify a real problem, understand its causes, test possible solutions and improve an idea based on evidence is what turns an idea into innovation.
This is where schools and universities have a major responsibility.
Students should not only be asked to define concepts. They should also be asked what those concepts mean in real situations. They should investigate community problems, conduct experiments, analyse cases, design projects and explain how they would respond to practical challenges.
A student studying agriculture, for instance, should understand not only agricultural theories but also why farmers struggle with storage, access to markets, finance, climate conditions and technology. A computer science student should not only learn programming languages but also understand how technology can address real problems.
This kind of education makes learning more purposeful.
It also gives students an opportunity to discover that their education can be used to create value beyond examinations.

If Nigeria genuinely wants more problem solvers, the change cannot be left entirely to individual students. Schools, universities, parents, employers and policymakers all have a role to play.
The first change must happen in the classroom. Teachers need room to move beyond teaching solely for examinations. Students should have opportunities to investigate questions, work collaboratively, conduct research and develop solutions. Assessment should also measure understanding and application rather than relying excessively on memorisation.
A student who can explain why a solution works should be valued alongside one who can reproduce a definition.
Universities can also strengthen the relationship between academic learning and practical experience. Internships, industrial training, laboratory work, entrepreneurship programmes, community projects and partnerships with businesses can expose students to problems that cannot be solved through textbooks alone.
This is particularly important because some skills are developed through practice.
The World Bank has noted that work experience and workplace exposure are important for skills development because many abilities are learnt or demonstrated through doing. It also recommends stronger links between education, training and the labour market.
Employers also need to communicate more clearly about the skills they require. If universities and training institutions understand what industries actually need, they can adjust programmes accordingly.
Nigeria’s labour market is changing. Digital technology is creating new occupations while transforming existing ones. Businesses increasingly need workers who can communicate, collaborate, analyse information, use technology and learn new skills.
A certificate earned several years ago cannot permanently guarantee that a person possesses all the skills required for a changing workplace.
Continuous learning is therefore becoming just as important as formal education.
Parents also need to reconsider some of the messages they give children about success. It is reasonable to encourage a child to take education seriously, but academic achievement should not be reduced to grades and certificates.
Parents can ask different questions. Instead of only asking, “What did you score?” they can also ask, “What did you learn?”, “What problem did you solve?” or “How can you use what you learnt?”
These questions help children understand that education has a purpose beyond passing examinations.
Students themselves must also take responsibility. They should recognise that the absence of a job immediately after graduation does not necessarily mean their education has failed, but it can be a signal to examine the skills they have developed.
A graduate may need to learn digital tools, improve communication, develop a technical skill, understand how businesses operate or gain practical experience. The willingness to learn beyond the classroom can make a significant difference.
This is especially important because the world of work is not static.
The World Bank’s 2026 human capital report found that Nigeria’s learning and workforce skill deficits remain significant. It reported that Nigerian student test scores in 2025 were still one point below their 2010 level and placed Nigeria’s education pillar score below the median for lower-middle-income countries.
These figures should encourage a broader conversation about what educational success means.
Nigeria cannot afford to produce young people who spend years acquiring qualifications without acquiring the ability to apply knowledge.
At the same time, the argument for problem solvers should never become an argument against certificates. Formal qualifications remain essential in many professions and can provide evidence of specialised knowledge. The real goal is to connect the two.
Nigeria needs certificate holders who are also problem solvers. A medical doctor needs both professional certification and the ability to make sound decisions when confronted with complicated cases. An engineer needs both technical training and practical problem-solving skills. A teacher needs both educational knowledge and the ability to respond to the different needs of learners.
The certificate opens the door, but competence determines what happens after the door is opened.
This distinction should also influence how employers recruit. Organisations should look beyond grades and qualifications and examine what applicants can actually do. Interviews, practical assessments, portfolios, case studies and demonstrations can provide a clearer picture of a candidate’s abilities.
A young graphic designer, for example, may have little formal work experience but a strong portfolio demonstrating creativity and technical ability. A software developer may demonstrate competence through projects they have built. A graduate applying for a communications role may demonstrate their ability through writing samples.
Such evidence can complement formal qualifications.
Ultimately, Nigeria’s development depends on its people being able to transform knowledge into results. The country has no shortage of intelligent young people, graduates and certificate holders. The greater challenge is ensuring that education develops the capacity to use intelligence productively.
The future belongs to people who can learn, adapt, question, create and solve.
Nigeria does not need to choose between certificates and skills. It needs an education system where certificates are supported by genuine competence.
Degrees and professional qualifications will continue to matter, particularly in careers where formal training and licensing are essential. However, certificates alone cannot repair broken systems, create businesses, improve public services or solve the everyday problems facing communities.
Those tasks require people who can think beyond the examination hall.
Nigeria needs graduates who can look at a problem without immediately asking who will solve it for them. It needs young people who can investigate causes, test ideas, learn from failure and develop practical solutions. It needs professionals who can continue learning when their original training is no longer enough.
The country’s education system should therefore move towards producing people who are not merely qualified on paper but useful in practice.
The real measure of education should not only be what certificate a person has collected, but what they can do with what they have learnt.
For Nigeria to become more productive, innovative and competitive, the next generation must be equipped not just to search for answers, but to become the people capable of finding them.
