Chair of Digital Improvement: Augmented Reality Research Study and Information Sovereignty in the Smart Home

This workshop, run by scientists from the Chair of Digital Improvement at the Department of Service and Economics, provides individuals a hands-on opportunity to experience ingenious technologies: With iPad and flowAR app, they can design, build and plant a garden of the future with the help of increased reality.

The “Smart Home” part of the exhibit highlights the field of stress in between comfort and control, with a focus on the main concern of information sovereignty: How can we make use of the benefits of a networked home without giving up control of our individual data?

Department of Computer Technology: Lab Trip Featuring TU Dortmund University’s Computer technology

Innovation enthusiasts can experience the future of autonomous systems at TU Dortmund University throughout a laboratory tour through the Department of Computer Science. Self-governing vehicles, virtual human beings, and intelligent machines: today’s computer technology is stepping beyond the screen and into the physical world.

The event starts with an introductory lecture by Prof. Mario Botsch on the subject: Realistic Virtual Human Designs: Development, Simulation, and Applications. The lecture shows how realistic virtual human beings can be produced through 3D scanning, how these virtual models can be animated and simulated, and presents fascinating applications from present tasks.

Lamarr Institute: Social Duty, Sustainability and Development in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

How can we use AI in concrete applications to overcome existing difficulties in the Ruhr region? What chances does it use for sustainable development, social justice and development– and where do the dangers lie? To explore these and other concerns, the Young AI Leaders Neighborhood Dortmund and the Lamarr Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Expert system invite visitors to sign up with a practice-oriented workshop. The workshop is planned for all those who wish to learn more about the social impact and responsible usage of AI or about Dortmund’s growing AI landscape. No anticipation is required.

The program arranged by the Department of Computer Science will occur parallel to the workshop and in the same building. All participants will have the opportunity to gain additional insights into the topic after the workshop.

Graduate School of Logistics: Fostering Data Culture

In this interactive workshop, participants will get to grips with the subject of information culture and learn how they can promote a sustainable, data-oriented culture in their own companies. The objective is to raise awareness toward the significance of a strong information culture along with for the participants to assess their own beginning position and identify concrete, future-proof measures suitable for additional development. The Graduate School of Logistics at TU Dortmund University is responsible for organizing the workshop.

CET: AI and Data in SMEs

A lecture offered by staff from the Center for Entrepreneurship and Transfer (CET) will check out the reasons little and medium-sized business (SMEs) need to deal with data and why data- or AI-based projects however often fail. Dr. Eugen Krebs, Dr. Andreas Becker and Sebastian Ostapiuk will present concrete examples and best practices customized to the requirements of SMEs.

Journalism: SciCAR Conference Networks Science and Data Journalism

The Institute of Journalism is extending an invitation to the SciCAR conference on 5 September, which will bring together reporters and scientists to initiate collective projects in the area of computer-assisted reporting (CAR) and foster interdisciplinary exchange. Keynote speeches, panel discussions and workshops will analyze, to name a few topics, research study on the energy transition and political patterns, AI tools and information sources. Conference organizers are Netzwerk Recherche (an association that supports journalistic research and quality journalism), the Institute of Journalism at TU Dortmund University, Wissenschaftspressekonferenz (a journalists’ association) and the Science Library Germany.
