The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a Southern School of the Nigeria Cops Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of continuous efforts to reform policing through education.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, stated the initiative lines up with the agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rearrange the Nigeria Police for improved effectiveness and professionalism.

According to the minister, the proposed school has gotten presidential approval and will run as an affiliate of the existing academy in Kano. He added that scholastic activities are expected to start in between September and November 2026.

“The establishment of the Southern Campus of the Nigeria Cops Academy becomes part of our wider commitment to reinforcing nationwide security through education-driven reforms,” Alausa said.

He likewise divulged that the Federal Government is updating over 40 police colleges across the country into monotechnics and specialised training centres, backed by a presidential waiver to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, applauded the move and declared the preparedness of the Nigeria Police to support the implementation.

“This initiative will significantly boost the capability and professionalism of our officers, and we are fully committed to its success,” the IGP stated.

The Ministry of Education repeated its commitment to continual collaboration and reforms aimed at constructing a well-trained and future-ready police force.
