ABUJA, NIGERIA– Barely 24 hr after reforming its principal administrative cabinet, the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, previously the University of Abuja, has approved the elevation of 34 senior academic personnel into the elite professorial cadres.

The promotions were approved during the Council’s 101st Routine Meeting, which concluded on Saturday, July 11, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Pro-Chancellor, Senator Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso.

This mass promo becomes part of a more comprehensive effort to enhance personnel morale, broaden research study capability, and strengthen the organization’s global academic competitiveness.

Rigorous Academic Peer Review Dictates Elevations

According to an official statement released by the university’s directorate of public relations, signed by Dr Habib Yaquob, the promos were divided down the middle into 2 unique academic tiers:

  • Complete Professorship Tier: 17 Senior Speakers were elevated to the rank of substantive Professor.

  • Partner Professorship Tier: 17 scholars were promoted to the rank of Associate Teacher (Reader).

The council revealed that the promotions officially take retroactive effect from October 2025.

The approvals followed months of strenuous external peer-review evaluations, where independent global and domestic experts scrutinised the released scholarly works, developments, and training histories of the affected academics to make sure compliance with worldwide benchmarks.

Crossing 14 Specialised Disciplines

The promo workout cut broad swaths across the university’s multi-disciplinary layout, straight strengthening academic accreditations in core clinical, medical, and humanities departments.

Praising the freshly raised faculty members, the Vice-Chancellor, Teacher Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, emphasised that the exercise underscores the organization’s unwavering commitment to meritocracy and intellectual quality.

“These promos are not just about achieving a greater rank,” Vice-Chancellor Fawehinmi said.

“They show our core belief that effort, research study devotion, and consistent institutional service should be acknowledged and properly rewarded. I praise all those promoted and motivate them to see this turning point as a call to even greater service to the university, their professional fields, and larger society.”

The Vice-Chancellor further guaranteed the campus community that the university administration will continue to streamline internal assessment treatments to ensure subsequent promotion exercises are conducted flawlessly and on schedule, in stringent compliance with university civil policies.
