CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE— The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has taken a considerable action toward improving healthcare outcomes in the South-South region with the commissioning of specialised automobiles donated by the PRIMS Project.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, officially received the automobiles on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the organization’s main campus.
The donation, which follows UNICAL’s success in a competitive grant procedure funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Structure, becomes part of a broader effort to digitise and improve the monitoring of maternal and child health across Cross River State.
The PRIMS project (Pregnancy Danger Details and Tracking System) is designed to track pregnancies in real-time, recognizing important threat factors to guarantee more secure deliveries and minimize neonatal mortality.
The University of Calabar was chosen for the application of this grant after a strenuous evaluation of research study capacities across numerous Nigerian tertiary institutions.
During the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Offiong kept in mind that the acquisition of these automobiles reinforces UNICAL’s position as a leading centre for medical research in West Africa.

He emphasised that the university’s role extends beyond the classroom into supplying practical, life-saving solutions for the host community.
The task is expected to supply a crucial safety net for thousands of women in Cross River State. By deploying these automobiles, the university can now bridge the logistics space that typically avoids rural dwellers from accessing specialised obstetric care during emergency situations.
The Vice-Chancellor applauded the project team for their academic excellence, keeping in mind that the effective procurement of the grant is a testament to the high quality of research study propositions stemming from the university’s College of Medical Sciences.
