A 2026 meta-analysis of 26 empirical studies found that electronic homework had a statistically significant positive effect on K–12 academic achievement, although its effect was stronger for assignment scores than examination scores.
This suggests that digital homework is not simply a replacement for paper worksheets. It may become a different form of learning altogether.
For many years, homework largely meant completing questions from a textbook or copying notes into an exercise book. Digital technology has expanded what students can do outside the classroom.
A geography student can explore an interactive map instead of relying solely on a printed diagram. A science student can watch a demonstration of an experiment that cannot easily be performed at home. A language learner can practise pronunciation using digital tools, while a mathematics student can receive immediate feedback after attempting a problem.
This changes the possibilities available to teachers.

The future of homework may therefore involve less emphasis on producing perfect answers and more emphasis on demonstrating how students think.
The future of digital homework also raises questions about access.
It is easy to assume that every student has a smartphone, laptop, reliable electricity and affordable internet access. In reality, access to digital resources varies significantly between families, communities and countries.
This is particularly important in Nigeria, where the availability and affordability of reliable internet, electricity and digital devices can affect students’ ability to complete online assignments.
A school that moves entirely from paper homework to online platforms without considering these differences could unintentionally disadvantage students who have fewer resources at home.
Technology should therefore expand educational opportunity rather than create another barrier to it.
Teachers may need to provide alternatives for students who cannot access certain digital tools consistently. Schools can also consider downloadable materials, offline resources and assignments that do not require constant internet connectivity.
This is not an argument against digital homework. Rather, it is an argument for thoughtful implementation.
UNESCO has noted that digital technologies are not simply support tools; they are also changing teaching and learning and creating new demands for education systems, including the ability to function effectively in digital and hybrid environments.
The implication is significant. Schools cannot simply purchase technology and assume that learning will automatically improve. Teachers, students and parents must also understand how to use those tools effectively.
Digital literacy therefore becomes part of the homework conversation.
A student who knows how to search Google but cannot distinguish between reliable and unreliable information has not necessarily developed strong research skills. Likewise, a student who can use AI to generate an answer but cannot explain the answer may have completed the task without actually learning the material.
The future of homework must therefore include teaching students how to use technology responsibly.
One of the most promising possibilities of digital homework is personalisation.
Traditional homework often gives every student the same assignment regardless of their individual strengths and weaknesses. Digital platforms, however, can potentially provide different levels of practice depending on how a learner performs.
A student who understands a concept quickly could move to more challenging questions, while another student could receive additional practice on areas they have not yet mastered.
This could make homework more targeted.
For example, if a student repeatedly makes mistakes when solving fractions, a digital learning system could provide additional exercises focused specifically on that area. Once the student demonstrates improvement, the system could move them to a more advanced level.
This approach may be especially useful in subjects such as mathematics, where later concepts often depend on earlier ones.
However, personalisation should not become an excuse for removing teachers from the learning process.
Technology can identify patterns in student responses, but teachers understand factors that an algorithm may not recognise. A student may be struggling because of a language barrier, lack of confidence, family responsibilities or difficulty understanding the way a particular concept has been explained.
Human judgement remains essential.
The strongest future model may therefore be one in which technology handles some routine practice while teachers focus more heavily on explanation, feedback, mentoring and deeper learning.
The debate about homework often focuses on quantity. Parents may ask how many assignments their children receive, while schools may compare how much work students are completing.
However, the more important question may be what the homework is designed to achieve.
A 30-minute assignment that requires students to apply what they learnt could be more valuable than two hours of repetitive exercises.
Research has generally found a positive relationship between homework and achievement, but the relationship is not enormous or universal. A 30-year meta-analysis of mathematics and science research found an overall small positive relationship between homework and academic achievement.
More recent research also suggests that the relationship between homework duration and achievement should not simply be interpreted as “more homework equals better results”. The quality, purpose and context of the assignment matter.
This is especially relevant in a digital environment where students can spend hours online without necessarily learning effectively.
Technology can make homework faster, but it can also introduce new distractions. A student may open a laptop to complete an assignment and find themselves moving between social media, entertainment, messaging platforms and unrelated websites.
The future of homework must therefore address attention as well as access.
Teachers may increasingly design shorter, more focused tasks that require active participation rather than long periods of screen time.

Another major possibility is that digital technology could allow students to demonstrate knowledge in different ways.
A student who struggles to express an idea through a traditional essay may be able to create a video presentation, digital poster, podcast or interactive project. This can provide additional ways for students to communicate what they understand.
However, creativity should not mean abandoning academic standards.
Students still need to research carefully, organise their ideas and communicate accurately. Digital projects should therefore have clear learning objectives rather than becoming technology exercises simply because schools want to appear modern.
The best digital homework will combine creativity with intellectual substance.
A history student could create a short documentary based on primary and secondary sources. A science student could record an explanation of an experiment. A literature student could produce a digital presentation analysing a character or theme. These tasks can require students to understand information deeply before they can explain it effectively.
Perhaps the biggest misconception about the future of homework is that technology will eventually make teachers unnecessary.

Students still need people who can understand their individual struggles, challenge their assumptions, encourage them after failure and help them connect knowledge to real life.

A teacher can also help students develop qualities that are difficult to measure through automated systems, including judgement, empathy, collaboration and intellectual curiosity.
This means the future of homework is unlikely to be entirely digital or entirely traditional.
Instead, it will probably combine technology with human teaching.
Paper may remain useful for some tasks. Digital platforms may be better for others. AI may support certain forms of practice and research, while teachers remain central to deeper discussion and assessment.
The important question will not be whether homework is completed on paper or a screen. It will be whether the task helps the student learn.
The future of homework in a digital world is unlikely to involve simply replacing exercise books with laptops. Technology is changing what homework can look like, but it is also forcing schools to reconsider what homework should accomplish.
Digital assignments can provide interactive learning, faster feedback, personalised practice and greater flexibility. At the same time, they can create challenges involving distraction, unequal access, excessive screen time and the growing use of artificial intelligence.
Research shows that electronic homework can support academic achievement, but digital delivery alone does not guarantee better learning. The quality of the task remains crucial.
The most effective homework of the future may therefore be homework that technology cannot easily complete on a student’s behalf. It may ask learners to investigate, think critically, solve problems, reflect on experiences, defend their ideas and demonstrate how they reached their conclusions.
