
MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE— In a significant boost to grassroots education in Northeast Nigeria, the global NGO Strategy International has actually successfully assisted in the expert accreditation of 359 teachers across three conflict-affected local government areas in Borno State.
The instructors, drawn from Kala-Balge, Damboa, and Mobbar, were formally inducted into the mentor occupation on Thursday, April 30, 2026, after passing the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Specialist Qualifying Examination.
The initiative, funded by the European Union and carried out in partnership with the Distinct Care and Support Foundation (CASFOD), aims to reverse the “learning hardship” exacerbated by years of regional insecurity.
Resolving the “Quality Space” in Education
Speaking throughout the induction event in Maiduguri, Helen Idiong, Director of Programme Quality and Influencing at Plan International Nigeria, revealed a startling information point that prompted the intervention: in spite of efforts to increase school registration because 2016, only two out of every 10 main school graduates in the region were found to be satisfying basic learning benchmarks.
“We took a seat and did some analysis to learn what the real issue is,” Idiong discussed.

Master Trainers: Senior lecturers from the University of Maiduguri worked as fitness instructors to prepare the candidates.

Success Rate: Out of 401 supported candidates, 359 (almost 90%) effectively passed the strenuous TRCN expert tests.

Period: The recipients underwent a detailed one-year professional development program.
The selection of Kala-Balge, Damboa, and Mobbar was strategic, as these local government locations (LGAs) have historically suffered a few of the most serious disturbances to their instructional infrastructure due to the insurgency.
