The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening education reforms, expanding opportunities for young Nigerians, and deepening collaboration with Commonwealth nations to promote sustainable development and shared prosperity.
The commitment was restated during the 2026 Commonwealth Day celebration held at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. The event brought together policymakers, education stakeholders, and development partners to reflect on the role of education in shaping a prosperous future for member states.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the 2026 theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” aligns with the policy direction of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly the Renewed Hope Agenda which prioritises education reform, innovation, human capital development, and inclusive economic growth.
Alausa emphasised that the government remains committed to equipping young Nigerians with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
“The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day speaks directly to our national priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Education reform, innovation and human capital development remain central to our strategy for unlocking opportunities and ensuring inclusive growth,” the minister said.
He further highlighted the Federal Government’s renewed focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver of national development. According to him, approximately 250,000 Nigerians are currently enrolled in programmes across technical colleges, skills centres, and accredited vocational institutions where they are acquiring industry-relevant skills for the modern workforce.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, described education as the most powerful tool for unlocking opportunities, reducing inequality, and advancing national development.
“Education remains the most powerful instrument for unlocking opportunities, reducing inequality and accelerating national development. Nigeria will continue to leverage partnerships within the Commonwealth to strengthen learning systems, research collaboration and youth empowerment initiatives,” Enitan said.
The Commonwealth Day celebration underscored Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging global partnerships to advance education, empower young people, and contribute to shared prosperity among member states.
