GUSAU, NIGERIA– The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has revealed the death of its Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Marafa, who was supposedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.

The university revealed his death on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in a declaration signed by its Registrar, Oladipo Ajayi.

According to the declaration, Marafa was travelling from Gusau when he was supposedly shot, although the university did not provide additional information on the scenarios surrounding the event or recognize those responsible.

“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Personnel and Trainees of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, which took place today, Sunday, 6th September 2026,” the statement stated.

The university explained the deceased as a dedicated and committed employee who served the institution meritoriously and inhabited different positions of duty during his career.

Marafa Functioned As Bursar From 2022

According to the university, Marafa was appointed Bursar in September 2022, a position he assumed with a strong sense of duty and dedication to the improvement of the organization.

NOUN stated his death represented a significant loss to the university community, explaining him as a prominent colleague, devoted administrator and valued member of the NOUN household.

“His unexpected death is a profound loss to the University neighborhood. The whole University neighborhood mourns the death of a distinguished associate, committed administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement included.

The university extended its acknowledgements to his immediate family, loved ones, friends, associates and others grieving his death.

It also prayed for strength for the bereaved household and the larger university neighborhood.

“We hope that the Almighty Allah grants the household and the entire University neighborhood the fortitude to bear this permanent loss,” the university stated.

Janaza Prayer Arranged For Monday

The university revealed that the Janaza prayer for the late Bursar would be held at the NOUN Jumaat Mosque in Abuja at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Marafa’s death comes as the university neighborhood mourns the loss of an administrator who had served in an essential monetary management position considering that his consultation as Bursar in 2022.
