OSUN, NIGERIA – The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service year of 27 corps members in Osun State over various acts of indiscipline.
The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Ekeng Kubiangha, disclosed this on Thursday in Osogbo during a low-key passing-out parade (POP) for the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members.
Kubiangha also revealed that 31 corps members absconded from service during the service year.
According to him, 1,969 corps members participated in the passing-out ceremony across the 30 local government areas of the state and the NYSC area office.
He urged the outgoing corps members to apply the knowledge, skills and experiences acquired during their service year as they begin the next phase of their lives.
The coordinator particularly encouraged them to build on the entrepreneurial skills gained through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to navigate the challenges and realities of the Nigerian economy.

He also charged the corps members to remain disciplined, responsible and committed to making meaningful contributions to society.
“I want to stress that the completion of the service year should mark the beginning of greater opportunities, responsibilities and service to humanity.
“The need for the corps members to sustain the positive values acquired during their service year and apply the experiences and skills gained to their personal and professional development cannot be overemphasised,” he said.
Following the passing-out ceremony, Kubiangha embarked on a monitoring exercise in Boripe and Ifelodun Local Government Areas, where he interacted with serving corps members in the zone.
He urged the serving corps members to remain focused and make effective use of the opportunities provided by the NYSC scheme.
The coordinator also encouraged them to maintain a strong spiritual life, reminding them of the transient nature of human existence and the importance of living purposeful and impactful lives.
Common Reasons for Service Extension
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) extends a corps member’s service year as a disciplinary penalty for violating the NYSC bye-laws. Reasons for extension of service may include:
- Absenteeism: Leaving your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) or missing mandatory activities like monthly biometric clearance and Community Development Service (CDS) without written permission from the State Coordinator.
- Abscondment: Travelling out of your state of deployment without proper approval or abandoning your primary duty station.
- Assault: Physically or verbally attacking an NYSC official or an authority figure at your PPA.
- Unauthorised Private Practice: Engaging in commercial or external private jobs prohibited during primary service.
- Breach of Confidentiality or Rules: Leaking official information or examination questions.
Any member who leaves his duty station or absents himself from any official activity without the written consent of the State Coordinator shall be tried by the Corps Disciplinary Committee and, if found guilty, be liable to extension of service with half pay, double the period of absence.
