A student may forget a page of notes within days but remember a story told by a teacher months later. They may struggle to recall a list of historical dates yet vividly remember the story of the person behind those events. This common experience is not simply because stories are more entertaining. There are important reasons why the human brain often finds meaningful narratives easier to process and remember than disconnected pieces of information.

For students, this has serious implications for learning. Traditional education often depends heavily on copying notes, memorising definitions and revising large amounts of information before examinations. However, when information is connected to characters, events, emotions, causes and consequences, it can become easier to understand and retrieve. This does not mean stories automatically make every subject easier, but they can provide the mental connections that help information become more meaningful.

The science of learning shows that memory is influenced by how information is processed, connected and later retrieved. Research on learning has also found strong evidence for strategies such as retrieval practice and spaced learning, which help students retain information over time. Storytelling can complement these approaches by giving students something meaningful to understand and remember rather than leaving them with isolated facts.

One reason students often remember stories better than notes is that stories give information a structure. Instead of presenting facts as separate pieces, a narrative connects them through a sequence of events. Something happens, there is a reason for it, a problem develops and eventually there is an outcome. This structure gives the brain relationships to work with.

Consider the difference between asking a student to memorise that Nigeria gained independence on 1 October 1960 and explaining the political and social events that led to independence. The date is important, particularly for an examination, but the surrounding story can make the date more meaningful. A student who understands what happened before independence, who was involved and why the event mattered has several mental connections through which the date can later be recalled.

This principle applies far beyond history. In biology, students can memorise the stages of a process as a list, or they can understand the process as a sequence in which one event leads to another. In literature, students follow characters through conflicts and decisions. In economics, they can examine how one financial decision affects households, businesses or governments. Even in mathematics, a word problem can turn an abstract calculation into a situation with a purpose.

This is important because human memory does not work like a filing cabinet in which every fact is stored independently. New information becomes easier to retrieve when it is connected to knowledge that is already available. A story naturally creates those connections.

Stories also provide context. A note might state that a particular event occurred, but a narrative can explain where it happened, who was involved, what happened first and what followed. The additional context gives students more pathways to the same information.

However, this does not mean that students should turn every lesson into a long story. Too much information can become distracting, particularly when the narrative contains details that are unrelated to the learning objective. The value of storytelling comes from using narrative to clarify and organise important ideas, not from adding entertainment for its own sake.

The same principle explains why a teacher’s personal example can sometimes remain in a student’s memory long after the textbook definition has been forgotten. A real-life example creates a connection between an abstract concept and something the learner can imagine.

This is especially useful for younger students, but older learners can benefit too. University students studying law, medicine, engineering, education or social sciences still need to understand relationships between concepts. A case study, clinical scenario or real-world problem can provide a narrative framework that makes technical information easier to follow.

Another important reason stories can be memorable is emotion. Information that carries emotional significance often receives more attention than information that feels completely detached from experience.

Think about the difference between reading a list of events and hearing about an individual who experienced those events. The second version may create curiosity, sympathy, surprise, anger or even excitement. These emotional responses can make the information feel more significant.

This does not mean students must experience strong emotions for learning to occur. Rather, moderate emotional engagement can help direct attention towards information. When students care about what is happening in a story, they are more likely to concentrate on it.

This has important implications for classroom teaching. A teacher explaining climate change, for instance, might present statistics about rising temperatures and changing weather patterns. Those figures are important, but a story about how changing rainfall patterns affect a farming community can give the statistics a human context. Students can then connect the scientific information with a situation they can understand.

The same approach can be used when teaching health, geography, civic education and social sciences. Instead of presenting information as isolated facts, teachers can show how those facts affect people and communities.

However, there is a distinction between emotional engagement and emotional manipulation. Effective storytelling should help students understand the subject, not deliberately overwhelm them. A dramatic story that students remember but cannot connect to the lesson has limited educational value.

Emotion can also influence attention. A student is more likely to remember a surprising classroom demonstration than a routine explanation because the unusual event creates a stronger mental impression. Similarly, humour, curiosity and suspense can make lessons more engaging when they are used appropriately.

This is one reason students sometimes remember a teacher’s unusual classroom example years after forgetting the exact notes they copied. The experience was not simply information; it was an event.

For Nigerian students, teachers can take advantage of familiar experiences when explaining academic concepts. A lesson about entrepreneurship could be connected to a local business. Economics can be explained through household budgeting. Agricultural science can be connected to farming practices within the community. Physics can be illustrated through everyday technology. These connections make academic knowledge feel less distant from students’ lives.

Remembering a story, however, is not automatically the same as learning a subject. Students can remember an entertaining story without understanding the academic concept it was supposed to illustrate. This is why storytelling works best when it is combined with active learning.

After hearing a story, students should be encouraged to retrieve the important information without simply looking back at their notes. They might explain what happened, identify the main concept, answer questions about the events or apply the lesson to a new situation.

This connects storytelling with one of the strongest findings in learning science: retrieval practice. Research reviews have found that actively retrieving information can strengthen later retention, while spacing learning across time can improve long-term memory.

For example, after a teacher tells a story explaining a scientific process, students could close their books and describe the process in their own words. A few days later, the teacher could ask them to explain it again or solve a related problem. The story provides the initial structure, while retrieval and repetition help strengthen the memory.

This is much more effective than assuming that because students enjoyed a lesson, they automatically learnt everything in it.

Teachers can also encourage students to create their own stories around difficult material. A student studying history might imagine the experiences of people living during a particular period. Someone learning biology could describe a process as a sequence of events. A law student could organise a case around the people involved, the dispute, the legal question and the eventual decision.

These techniques can transform revision from passive reading into active reconstruction.

Notes still have an important role. Students need written records of definitions, formulas, dates, terminology and other information. The problem begins when note-taking becomes the entire learning process. Copying several pages of material does not necessarily mean that the information has been understood.

A better approach is to use notes as a starting point and then build connections around them. Students can ask themselves why a concept matters, how it relates to something they already know and where it could be applied. They can then test their understanding through questions and practice.

This is particularly important because students often mistake familiarity for mastery. Reading the same notes repeatedly can make the material look familiar, creating the feeling that it has been learnt. Yet when the notes are closed, the student may discover that recalling the information independently is much harder.

Research on retrieval practice and spacing provides strong support for moving beyond passive rereading. A multi-site classroom study involving 351 introductory psychology students found evidence that retrieval and spacing could improve learning, although the effects depended on how the practice was designed. A 2025 meta-analysis of mathematics learning likewise found a small-to-medium overall benefit for spaced practice compared with massed practice.

The lesson is clear: stories can help students understand and organise information, but students still need to retrieve, practise and revisit that information if they want it to remain accessible.

There is also an important implication for Nigerian schools, where examination preparation can sometimes encourage heavy reliance on memorisation. Students facing WAEC, NECO, JAMB and university examinations may feel pressure to absorb large volumes of information quickly. While memorisation remains necessary for certain facts, a deeper understanding of concepts can make revision more effective and help students handle questions that require application rather than simple recall.

Teachers therefore have an opportunity to make lessons more memorable without abandoning academic rigour. A history teacher can introduce a topic through the experience of a person who lived through it. A science teacher can begin with a real-world problem and use the lesson to explain the science behind it. An English teacher can explore how a character’s decisions reveal a theme. A mathematics teacher can turn an abstract problem into a practical situation students recognise.

The objective is not to make every lesson dramatic. It is to make important information meaningful.

Students do not remember stories simply because stories are enjoyable. Narratives can make information easier to organise, connect facts to context and create emotional and mental associations that give learning greater meaning. When students understand how ideas relate to one another, they have more than isolated facts to recall; they have a structure that can help them retrieve those facts later.

This does not mean teachers should abandon notes, textbooks or traditional instruction. Rather, storytelling can complement these methods by giving difficult information a clearer context. Notes provide detail, while stories can provide structure and meaning. When these approaches are followed by questioning, practice, retrieval and spaced revision, students have a stronger opportunity to retain what they learn.

For students, the lesson is equally important. Reading a story or listening to an engaging explanation is only the beginning. To turn a memorable lesson into lasting knowledge, they must close the book, recall what they have learnt, explain it in their own words and return to it over time. Research on effective learning consistently supports the importance of these active processes.

Ultimately, the strongest learning happens when information means something to the learner. A page of notes may contain everything a student needs to know, but a well-constructed story can help the brain understand why that information matters. In an education system increasingly concerned with helping students move beyond memorisation towards understanding, application and critical thinking, the power of storytelling deserves far greater attention.
