The Lagos State Government has formally released the Digital National Education Management Info System (DNEMIS) for the 2026 Yearly School Census, marking a major shift from handbook to digital education information collection throughout public and private main and secondary schools in the state.
The flag-off event, hung on Thursday at Ikeja Junior Grade School, Bolade-Oshodi, signifies the beginning of a completely digital school census in compliance with the Federal government’s regulation mandating all states to adopt the National Education Management Info System for education information collection and management.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the effort as a substantial turning point in strengthening education preparation, governance and service delivery in Lagos State.
According to him, the Yearly School Census remains one of the most crucial workouts in the education sector since it supplies trusted data required for reliable planning, policy solution, budgeting and equitable allocation of educational resources.
He said the migration to the Digital National Education Management Details System would improve the quality, precision, trustworthiness and timeliness of education information, not only in Lagos State but throughout Nigeria.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state’s dedication to supporting the Federal Government’s digital improvement program in education and assured stakeholders that the Ministry would offer the essential technical support to ensure a seamless application of the new system.
He also prompted school administrators, owners of private schools, principals, head instructors and education officers to comply totally with census authorities by supplying accurate, total and timely details through the digital platform.
Likewise speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos State Coordinating System and Performing Statistician-General, Mr. Bashir Temitayo Oseni-Ope, described the introduction of the Digital NEMIS as a strategic intervention that would strengthen information integrity and promote evidence-based decision-making in the education sector.
He stressed that trustworthy education information is essential for reliable policy implementation, tracking and evaluation, including that the success of the digital census depends upon the active participation of every public and independent school in the state.
The Yearly School Census works as Nigeria’s main source of education statistics, recording critical data on school enrolment, teaching and non-teaching personnel, infrastructure, finding out facilities and other indications required for national and state education planning.
The state federal government kept in mind that the digital platform is anticipated to reduce mistakes related to manual data collection, improve data validation and analysis, remove duplication, enhance transparency and offer real-time details for tactical preparation and improved service shipment.
Other dignitaries at the event included the State Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee, Mr. Hakeem Bolaji; the General Secretary of the Conference of Personal Schools Association in Lagos (COPSAIL), Pastor Odemona Solomon; directors in the education sector, principals and other stakeholders.
