PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS— The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has finalised logistical plans to finish a total of 8,156 students during its upcoming 36th combined convocation ceremony.

The multi-day academic event has been scheduled to occur between Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, 2026.

Briefing reporters on Monday at the university facilities, the outbound Vice-Chancellor, Teacher Owunari Georgewill, unveiled the operational schedule for the historic assembly.

He happily disclosed that the institution will confer special honours on 120 extraordinary scholars who effectively bagged First Class degrees.

Comprehensive Graduation Stats

The 36th combined convocation marks a significant output of proficient human capital across both undergraduate and specialised postgraduate research study portfolios.

Categorised Breakdown of the 2026 Graduands:

  • First Degrees: 5,822 graduands

  • Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD): 510 graduands

  • Master’s Degrees: 1,386 graduands

  • Doctor of Approach (PhD) Certificates: 438 graduands

The formal travel plan introduced with Monday’s media briefing. On Tuesday, the university will host a symbolic tree-planting event led by the total best-graduating trainee.

Wednesday will see the Class Day activities capped by the official Vice-Chancellor’s Supper, while Thursday is reserved for the Alumni Day homecomings, an extensive institutional Research Fair/Exhibition, and an interactive fireside chat.

The primary ceremonies begin on Friday with the primary scholastic procession and the conferment of first degrees, followed by the high-level award of postgraduate certificates at the recently built Convocation Arena on Saturday, June 6.

Infrastructure Advancement and Federal Support

Reflecting on the university’s evolution since its facility as a university college in 1975 and its complete federal upgrade in 1979, Teacher Georgewill kept in mind that the castle has grown into a powerhouse for research development and local financial effect.

The Vice-Chancellor, whose five-year period draws to an official close at the end of June 2026, revealed thankfulness to past and present governing councils for supporting his facilities stabilization masterplan.

These targeted financial interventions helped with the remodelling of worn out structures, building and construction of modern-day lecture theaters, rehab of student hostels, and the implementation of a centralized Development Center.

Notably, the financing also backed the continuous construction of the South-South Zonal Multipurpose Laboratory.

Teacher Georgewill particularly appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s Renewed Hope Initiatives in tertiary education.

He highlighted that UNIPORT recently got a fleet of electric tricycles, allowing the school to welcome clean energy and establish an environmentally friendly transport system within its campus gates.

Under his administration’s welfare drive, over 1,000 underprivileged undergraduates across numerous faculties protected full tuition support and scholastic mentorship.

The Vice-Chancellor described the initiative as a core testament to the university’s dedication to academic inclusivity and gain access to.

Concluding his address, Teacher Georgewill advised the inbound administration, alumni networks, and international partners that sustaining the academic ranking of UNIPORT requires a cumulative, constant financial investment.
