KANO, KANO STATE– In a significant step toward energy self-sufficiency for Nigerian tertiary institutions, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, on Friday, April 17, 2026, carried out the groundbreaking for a 1-megawatt (MW) solar hybrid power system at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The task is set to supply a sustainable and dependable electricity option for the university’s population of over 40,000 trainees and staff.

Explaining the effort as a “useful example” of the President’s dedication to renewable resource, Abdullahi kept in mind that the system is the first of its kind in the country to utilise specialised technology developed for the particular climatic conditions of Northern Nigeria.

Cutting-Edge Innovation for the Sahel

The 1MW pilot project is not a basic solar setup. Dr Abdullahi exposed that the system will deploy advanced photovoltaic panels efficient in producing power even under shade or during heavy dust and harmattan haze– conditions frequent in the Kano region.

Technical Innovations of the BUK Task:

  • Shade-Resilient Technology: High-efficiency panels designed to run in dirty or low-light conditions.

  • Smart Tracking: A mobile-integrated system allowing operators to track load and performance via smartphones and laptop computers.

  • Centralised Architecture: Interconnected inverters and lithium batteries organized in a structured format for simpler upkeep.

  • Sustainability: The task followed a comprehensive energy audit to ensure the 1MW supply aligns with the organization’s peak need patterns.

From 1MW to 4.5 MW: The Expansion Roadmap

While the current groundbreaking covers 1 megawatt, the ECN boss promised that this is simply the first stage of a bigger energy shift for BUK.

He revealed plans to revive and incorporate a 4.5-megawatt selection, effectively making the university a significant green-energy center in West Africa.

“I have actually already made a pledge that after this 1 megawatt, the 4.5-megawatt variety is going to be revived and recharged,” Abdullahi specified, guaranteeing the Vice-Chancellor that funding is fully protected and specialists have been mobilised.

The National “Green” Grid

The BUK project belongs to a broader federal mandate to decentralise power generation.

According to the ECN, the Federal Government is currently carrying out approximately 150 megawatts of solar jobs throughout the 36 states and the FCT.

The Vice-Chancellor and the university management welcomed the development, noting that reputable power is the “lifeblood” of research study, digital knowing, and campus security. With devices already on-site, work is expected to continue rapidly, using a blueprint for other federal universities dealing with the increasing costs of standard grid electricity and diesel generators.

As the ECN boss formally stated the job inaugurated, he revealed optimism that the “peaceful transformation” in renewable energy would serve the very best interests of the university neighborhood and mankind at big, securing BUK’s place at the forefront of the global energy shift.
