LAGOS, NIGERIA– VictualMart Limited, a Nigerian-led food innovation start-up, has been awarded a $30,000 grant by the Youth4Climate UNDP Rome Centre to scale its climate-smart meal subscription platform.
The initiative, co-led by the United Nations Advancement Program (UNDP) and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, acknowledges VictualMart’s ingenious approach to making nutritious meals accessible to low-income and vulnerable neighborhoods.

Established by Jane Odey, VictualMart distinguishes itself through an “offline-first” technological technique. Identifying that a significant part of the underserved population lacks constant internet access or smartphones, the platform uses USSD codes and Near Field Interaction (NFC)-powered prepaid cards.
This hybrid model enables users to prepay for meals, track their costs, and gain access to trustworthy nutrition no matter their socio-economic status or digital literacy levels. The core technological pillars of the design consist of:
- NFC & USSD Combination: Making it possible for meal payments and tracking without a smartphone or internet connection.
- AI-Powered Demand Forecasting: Helping local suppliers reduce food waste and optimise stock.
- Community Representative Networks: Making use of regional representatives to bridge the space in between technology and the end-user.
- Smart Meal Personalisation: Using AI to ensure meals are both healthy and culturally suitable.
Beyond consumer access, the Youth4Climate funding is earmarked to empower the supply side of the food cycle. VictualMart supplies local food vendors and farmers with digital tools to cut waste and increase their constant earnings.
