The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended 27‑year‑old Joseph Nanmwa Philips for presumably impersonating a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and defrauding moms and dads through forged documents and false promises of worldwide scholarships.
Philips was paraded at the NSCDC Command Head Office on Thursday, where he admitted to forging an NYSC call‑up letter following his apprehension by the Kwali Division of the Corps. The arrest followed problems of forgery, hacking, and impersonation including the National Mathematical Centre.
Investigations exposed that Philips used the forged NYSC letter to secure positioning at the International Model Science Academy, Kwali, where he taught for nearly a year while signing regular monthly clearance documents in Lugbe, Abuja Municipal Location Council (AMAC).
Additional questions revealed that he cloned university e-mail addresses and defrauded 7 moms and dads of roughly 1.3 million, assuring Cambridge University scholarships and extra lessons for their children.
Dealing with public issues, NSCDC FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu dismissed online claims of extortion or illegal detention as “unwarranted and harmful,” prompting citizens to remain vigilant. “The fact that this impersonation went unnoticed for almost a year reveals the need for both federal government companies and the private sector to be more careful,” he said.
Philips remains in NSCDC custody as examinations continue. He is expected to deal with charges including forgery and impersonation.
The Corps has reiterated its warning to parents and universities to always verify qualifications and deals, especially when global placements are included.
